During Christmas of 2022 my daughters advised me when I sail into the sunset and attend nightly concerts by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Tony Bennett, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Michael, they would bring a dumpster to throw away all my junk. They called the treasures I purchase all over the world junk and it made me decide to sell them all. I began selling in 2023 but encountered a few characters who were determined to get my items free of charge. It made me slow down with my intended plan, but in 2024, the liquidation begins again.
When the Awakening formed in the early 1970s, they combined veterans of Chicago’s R&B sessions and jazz players affiliated with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. The sextet drew on these diverse sources for its 1972 debut album, Hear, Sense and Feel, which was released on the California-based Black Jazz catalog (which also includes influential 70s LPs from multi-instrumentalist Doug Carn and pianist Walter Bishop Jr.). Like their friends who became Earth, Wind & Fire, the Awakening has an uplifting tone that’s as needed now as it was nearly 50 years ago. The album opens and closes with spoken-word recitations that call for raising consciousness, but the music throughout is joyous enough that it could deliver that optimistic message on its own. Prior to the Awakening, keyboardist Ken Chaney and trumpeter Frank Gordon had been part of the popular instrumental trio Young-Holt Unlimited, and that group’s soul inflections run through these tracks, especially “Kera’s Dance.” Chaney’s introspective lines also provide a striking contrast to the assertive, slightly dissonant solos of saxophonist and flutist Ari Brown and trombonist Steve Galloway on “When Will It Ever End.” This item was purchased many years ago it is the third purchase I made of the album. As a result, it was never played. The original inner sleeve is yellow from age, but the disc is flawless. I am not hyping the recording to make a quick sale, but as my doctor says, "This one is in good condition for its age." I placed a stamp on the record and album as a result of youthful madness, or it would price higher. Nevertheless, this highly sought-after masterpiece deserves a music loving friend.
