Error Copy of Abbey Road with the Mis-aligned Apple!

Abbey Road, by The Beatles. PCS 7088 - STEREO. This LP is rare for two reasons; one giving full credence to the other. Firstly this is a rare 'First Pressing Error Copy', with the odd 'Mis-aligned Apple' logo on the reverse of the sleeve. This original First Press record, with its deep green Apple label on Side One, does have the 'Her Majesty' credit on the label, but does not have the credit on the sleeve. Some 'Error Copies' have this, but others do not, but the rarest, actually, is the 'Mis-aligned Apple Logo', with 'Her Majesty'!

The 'Mis-aligned Apple' error was rectified very shortly during the First Pressing, thus any pressing with this on its cover, is a genuine First Press and an early run and usually with a Black, plain inner sleeve, which this fabulous record has, giving full provenance to its early 'off-the-press' credentials. The ‘rumour’ machine surrounding The Beatles, during this release, began and of course reared its head on a number of ocassions, but this, with its very obvious Apple oddity, became ’The Secret Record’’... and it didn't last for long!

Finding this cover is very, very, very difficult. So... the second rare issue is just that; this is a First Pressing, for obvious reasons, as stated. It is a 1969 First Pressing and... it has the dark green Apple on the label on Side One, which in later pressings became a lighter colour, plus it has no ‘Sold in the UK’ on the label; other, later pressings did and the other rarity is, that this is in absolutely fantastic condition, with no scratches or scuffs or marks on either side of the lovely dark, black lustrous vinyl. It is a superb example of this 41 year old record and is in Excellent Plus-Plus Condition. The vinyl, on both sides is superb, because I have owned it from new and was very young and didn't like it, hence it has pretty much remained un-played! If there are any vinyl marks, then they can only be seen (just) under direct bright light and are the most miniscule 'paper-hairlines'. The vinyl is totally superp, prestine and as 'good as it gets' for a record that has been played.

The vinyl is is in its plain black, corner-cut, inner sleeve and is crisp and well kept in its colour and shape. The later issues were white and had the Patent Pending visible, because they were white! The Garod & Lofthouse outer sleeve is fully laminated and has, again, the 'tell-tale' First Pressing, so called, 'Skinny Spine', which is very thin and unique to these First Press Error Copies. Later pressings had a much fuller spine and outer sleeve in general, which is another give-away as to the LP's provenance, too. It is un-marked, no writing or damage, but just the odd crease in the laminate, but retaining full colour, with just understandable signs of age.

As usual with EMI it has the Matrix, Mother & Stamper Codes within the run-off areas of the vinyl on both sides and these codes translate its provenance, with Matrix No (Side 1) YEX 749-2, with Mother being '6' and Stamper or Dye being 'PDR' or '602' and the Matrix (Side Two) YEX 750-1 and Mother '4', with Stamper 'ODR' or '502'.There is a lot of nonsense spoken about ‘Mother' & 'Stampers’ and the reality was that every LP had one master tape, being the final mix and from which a number of Positive Dyes or acetates were made, in stainless steel. These are the 'Mothers', from which copper 'Stampers' were cast and being copper, with a stainless coating, would only last for a thousand or so presses, hence the fact there many hundreds of 'Stampers, for any one LP, but all would be from the same 'Mothers', based on the same Studio Master.

Unlike most people, I base my knowledge on personal interest, having worked in the audio industry myself as an analogue Producer & Engineer in the 80's & 90's. I am a vinyl lover and any grading is done honestly and subjectively. The Record Collector's Guide is useful as a 'guide', but often it is too kind or misleading, so my gradings are personal, but based on experience.
