Description

Up for auction is an incredibly rare, one of a kind (?) metal mother for the unreleased Beatles 'Baby It's You' 45 on Vee-Jay from 1964.

Mother metal stampers are part of the process of making a record. First the master is made (which is a negative image, so can't be played on a turntable), then a mother metal stamper is made which is a positive image and can be played on a turntable, so yes this can be played. This is incredibly rare and I have to assume this is the only mother metal stamper for this release. It is single sided with just 'Baby It's You' as the track (same version as regular released version). What is unusual is that it was never actually released as a single by Vee-Jay. Clearly it was meant to but the legal injunctions from Capitol Records probably prevented that from happening.

It is 12" in diameter but only has the standard 7" playing surface in the middle of the front side. The back side is blank. Read condition issues below.

Record info:

The a-side houses the grooves in the middle. The middle hole is slightly smaller than a standard phonograph spindle but can still be played. The audio of the actual metal grooves is a solid VG+ with some surface noise with some visual imperfections but plays great! The blank area on the outer circle of the front has various scuffs and fingerprints. I have not attempted to clean this in any way. The blank back side is heavily oxidized (see photos). Overall the metal has some dishing/warping that in no way affects the the playing of the actual groove area.

Cover info:

It comes in a white cover with the Audio Matrix In. stamp on the front, along with some handwritten info, 63-3190 MO on top left corner in pencil and Baby It's You in pen on top right corner. It has some staining on front and moderate creasing on bottom left corner. The back cover is blank with creasing, some wear. The mother itself is in a plastic lined inner record sleeve.

Pressing info:
