Here is a RARE Beatles Beatlesongs Collection that includes the original Mark David Chapman cover and LP, the replacement cover LP that is still sealed. The original cover artist, William Stout’s autograph on a card about the original cover, and a copy of the Rhino Records press release.

Beatlesongs was a 1982 compilation album released by Rhino Records, containing novelty songs and parodies of the music of the Beatles. They hired artist William Stout to do the cover. Rhino and Stout had a longstanding relationship as he had designed the original Rhino logo. Stout responded with a cartoonish cover showing a bunch of various Beatles related characters and fans. The problem was that one of the 'fans' was clearly intended to be Mark David Chapman, who was convicted of killing John Lennon.

Decked out in Beatles suit and boots, the Chapman character was covered with 'John' buttons. There was an uproar among Beatles fans. Stout found himself the subject of a media blitz including radio interviews and a piece in People magazine.

Rhino responded by recalling the LP and replacing it with a modified version without the offending cover.

Rhino knew all along that Mark David Chapman was depicted on the cover. They only made about 5000 copies of the album and knew that if they waited for someone to notice, all hell would break loose with Beatles fans and the soon to be “Recalled” cover would be in big demand. They were right... it made the national news!

They did actually make a new cover by just using the Bealtes memorabilia picture off of the back of the original cover. They NEVER recalled the original cove! There is said to be only a few replacement covers made, about 100! You do not often see the replacement cover eBay, but you will see tons of the original cover because Rhino made more once the story hit the news and the demand went up.
