Original Capitol Records pre-release promotional copy of The Beatles’ 9th studio album Magical Mystery Tour released in the US on November 27th, 1967. Perhaps, someone will argue with me but I think this is the rarest of all Beatles promotional albums. It’s quite hard to find the explanation for this, but the first reason that comes to mind is that perhaps, only a handful promotional copies of this album were ever manufactured. Even though this album could be considered the peak of The Beatles’ psychedelic work, from the sales standpoint Capitol Records didn’t quite bet on it. Possibly, this is the main reason of the minimal amount of Magical Mystery Tour’s promotional copies. This promo copy has the cover variation with a perforated “FREE” promo punch in the upper right-hand corner of the front panel. This type of promo punch can only be found on the copies pressed at the Jacksonville, IL or Scranton, PA plant because the Los Angeles promotional copies have a “PROMO” punch. The promotional copies were distributed to the media and press several months before the official release of this album. Inside the gatefold cover you’ll find a fully intact 24-page full color picture book as promoted on the front cover. The characteristic feature of all of the East Coast pressings is the “No You’re Not” text which is written below the title of the “I Am The Walrus” track in the same typeface as “Little Nicola” inside the gatefold cover along with the album crediting all of the songs to BMI. If you like conspiracy theories than I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading about the story related to the script version of the “No, You’re Not” text found on the West Coast issue. Original 1st print 1.5” pressing ring Capitol Records MAL-2835 multicolor band labels with the BMI credit on all of the songs. This is the last US Beatles album issued in the Mono format. 1st Jacksonville, IL plant pressing vinyl with the handwritten matrix numbers excluding the machine stamped “IAM in a Triangle” factory identifier: Side 1 - MAL-1-2835-G4 O; Side 2 - MAL-2-2835-F7 #2 O. The album comes with the original white Capitol Records inner sleeve.

It's extremely hard to find a Mono copy of this album with a fully attached color booklet in such a beautiful Excellent condition, not to even mention the fact that this is a promotional copy. The cover doesn't have any splits, wear, writing, soiling or residue, only some very light hint of shelf wear at the top and bottom on the back. It has a beautiful white border with the fully intact edges. The rigid spine has a fully readable text. The original white Capitol inner sleeve is in Near Mint condition. I grade the vinyl as Excellent. It retains its stunning factory gloss having just a few very light and barely noticeable scuffs from the inner sleeve. The labels are very clean and in superb Near Mint condition. The vinyl plays great only having some very light occasional static which most likely could get reduced or go away if the record is professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
