Description
In this auction is 1 original Beatles Picture Sleeve and 1 original Beatles 45 RPM record. Here are the details:
-
“MATCHBOX” b/w “SLOW DOWN” by The Beatles
-
This is Capitol Records 5255.
-
This record was issued August 24, 1964.
-
It was issued by Capitol Records of Canada, Ltd.
-
The labels have perimeter printing that reads: “MFD. IN CANADA BY CAPITOL RECORDS OF CANADA LTD. REGISTERED USER. COPYRIGHTED.”
-
I read on-line at the Collecting The Beatles: Canada website some very interesting information about this record and picture sleeve:
“In Canada all picture sleeves that housed a Beatles' 45 RPM were imported from the U.S. and all picture sleeves were east coast sleeves with a straight (cut) top. West coast sleeves were never used. The picture sleeves Canada received would have been printed by Queen's Litho, New York and sent to Toronto directly or from Capitol's Scranton U.S. pressing plant.”
“When Capitol of Canada issued a single with a U.S. picture sleeve approximately 5000 were imported. Remaining records were issued in Capitol company (generic) sleeves.”
-
You can see that this is a Straight-cut (EAST COAST) Sleeve (as mentioned above).
-
Furthermore, the vinyl has the symbol (triangle with “IAM” inside of it) for Capitol’s Scranton Pressing Plant in the trail-off indicating that it was produced there (which is also mentioned above and explains why a Capitol of Canada record was produced at a U.S. Capitol Records pressing plant.)
-
Therefore, this is 1 of the 5000 issues of “Matchbox” b/w “Slow Down” (Capitol 5255) that was produced in the U.S. and was sent with its U.S.-produced picture sleeve to Canada in 1964 to be sold there.

The PICTURE SLEEVE is in VERY STRONG VG to VG+ CONDITION. There are NO SEAM SPLITS, NO RING WEAR, NO TEARS and NO WRITING on this sleeve. It is also primarily a flat sleeve. There is a small stain at the top right corner of the A-side of the sleeve on the “ES” in “BEATLES”. The same small stain is also on the corresponding place at the top left corner of the B-side of the sleeve on the top of the letters “THE”.
-
The VINYL is in NICE VG+ CONDITION and the LABELS are NICE and CLEAN with practically no wear/very minimal wear.
-
I’ve always wondered about the attraction that this particular Beatles’ picture sleeve has. I read that many collectors want it because the Beatles didn’t write either of the two songs and because it has the “live/stage concert” image (although not in the best focus) on the sleeve.
It’s a VERY DESIRABLE and one of the more HARD-TO-FIND in nice condition BEATLES PICTURE SLEEVES.
