Description
Where to begin with this one...!! A few things have been written on the internet ( including ebay descriptions) which have been a little fanciful, and so I will attempt to give some background about this Please Please Me album ( and its "sister" White album which I also have up for auction). But first of all the description.
This album is in a UK "Printed and made by Garrod and Lofthouse Ltd. Patents Pending" sleeve. The flipback sleeve has a medium sized "stereo" on the front and PCS 3042 on the back, but also makes reference on the flipback to PMC 1202. It is in excellent condition , and no different from any other UK stereo Please Please Me sleeves of the time (69/70)
The inner sleeve is not original.
The record labels (see photo) have one box EMI on them, have a "gramophone.." rim text and bear the UK catalogue number PCS 3042. There is no country of manufacture stated on the labels.
The vinyl bear the following matrices and stampers : YEX 94-1 and 95-1 (there are no stampers)
The vinyl is heavy weight (about 190 grms each) and has light markings visible under strong light, nothing serious and would grade excellent . The labels just have a few spindle marks and are excellent. The audio is great, really good with great bass response, very clear vocals,guitar etc. Just a very little background crackle now and then from the light marks.
So what is it? I have been collecting Beatles vinyl for many years and this and the White album pressing have always intrigued me. The first thing I would say is I am firmly convinced that no sleeve swapping has gone on here. Please see my White album listing for more info. Again this album was bought privately from a family that had had it many years. So I am convinced this is the way these albums came.
I think that EMI exported the sleeves, inners and any thing else that came with the album together with the 'mother ' plates ( with the UK matrices) to allow pressing in very small quantities . This would tie in with the matrix numbers being UK but no stamper numbers. Where they were pressed I am not sure, although an english colony like Hong Kong would make sense.
Either way, they rarely turn up, and are the closest thing we are ever going to get to a one box export pressing, as I believe EMI provided almost everything for the pressing of the album.
