Description
The Holy Grail of record collecting ... The Beatles debut album Please Please Me on the rare black and gold Parlophone label.
This one is the short-lived second press, with 'Northern Songs' credits rather than 'Dick James.' There were actually fewer of these made than the first press (about 12,000 compared to 25,000).
It's a piece of music history - and getting harder and harder to find.
This is from my own personal collection which I am now downsizing. It's barely been listened to by me and has been stored away in an acid free box for the last few years. I bought it about five years ago.
This is a decent overall copy, but it's obviously been listened to by some young Beatles fan over the years.
I'll list things in as much detail as I can so you know what you're getting:
The cover has that lovely golden shine which only the early versions have. The Angus McBean credit is right over to the far right side (again showing it's an original cover). It's still relatively sturdy but does have wear and tear, a little discolouration and the bottom is split all the way across, no doubt a result of the bottom flipback coming away. It was like this when I bought it. It also has a record shop sticker on the back... 'Saville Bros Record Shop' in the North East of England.
The inner sleeve is pretty good for its age, a little wear and creasing but no splits or tears.
The labels are good - clear and bold gold writing (many are faded) with a small amount of spindle wear. The vinyl, visually, is good for its age, though does - in the light - have quite a few expected age related scuffs and hairlines - a long one particularly on side, which doesn't appear to affect play.
It sounds good, bar the odd crackle and background click. Sadly I detected several skips when I played it (Anna, Chains, Ask Me Why and a stick (Ask Me Why). Side 2 holds up much better than side 1 - no skips at all there. However, my machine isn't great so you might have more success with a good clean and a listen on better equipment. But I can't guarantee a clean play on side 1.
The matrixes are: XEX 421 - 1N / XEX 422 - 1N. The stampers are: Side 1 - 1/GP. Side 2 - 12/GH.
Overall this is a chance to get a solid - but not perfect - copy of a legendary album in one of its rarest forms. A great addition for any collector. These second presses are getting very rare. It's now nearly 60 years old - and not that many were made!
