The BEATLES         YESTERDAY AND TODAY         Capitol STEREO ST 2553

 This auction is for the very desirable 1966 USA release ‘Yesterday And Today with a 3rd STATE ‘BUTCHER’ COVER. The history of this infamous cover is well documented. 

Capitol recalled the original BUTCHER cover and added a paste over alternative cover of the fab four sitting in and on a trunk. Subsequently some copies exist with the TRUNK sleeve paste over. Some, like this have had the trunk paste on peeled off to show the original cover.

 Firstly this is a STEREO copy, much rarer than mono in 1966. The original Capitol ‘Rainbow’ label record is in EXCELLENT condition and plays beautifully with virtual silence between tracks. The vinyl has minor surface scratches only.

 Secondly it comes with its original ‘Capitol ’66; Sounds Great’ ORANGE advertising inner sleeve with just minor rip on one side and a slight tear at the top, where the record goes in. An excellent example of this fragile inner sleeve!

 Now for the cover itself. This one has the small number 5 in the bottom right hand corner. American LPs had unlaminated covers so tended to get wear and tear faster than UK ones. 

This one has survived the years very well. On the back there are 4 red ticks next to 4 tracks . Plus of course there is general handling wear and grubbiness. The sides and spine however are still intact.

The front has been peeled very well, not perfectly, because there are 10 small areas where the peel damaged the original Butcher photo. The largest one is on Ringo’s face. Mostly though these blemishes are quite small and do not spoil the cover photo. The bottom right hand corner also has slight peeling damage. Check the photos out and you will see and it’s still a very nice 3rd state cover and rates as VERY GOOD+.
