The Bobbettes : Mr. Lee / Look At The Stars. 78rpm. US Atlantic.1144. This Fine Original US Atlantic Recording Is In Excellent Condition Throughout. "The Bobbettes" Five Young Girls From Harlem Were - Lead Singer, Reather Dixon, Second Lead, Emma Pought, Her Soprano Sister, Jannie Pought, Tenor, Laura Webb And Alto, Helen Gathers. The Girls Started Singing Together At School Under The Name "The Harlem Queens". When Local Promoter James Daily Saw Them At An Apollo Theatre Talent Night In Late 1956 He Became Their Manager, He Changed Their Name To "The Bobbettes" Because He Felt Their Former Name Sounded Too Raunchy And Landed Them A Contract With Atlantic Records. The Girls Went Into The Studio On February 28th 1957 To Record Four Of Their Own Songs Including "Mr. Lee" Based On A School Teacher They Didn't Like But Re-Written At The Suggestion Of Atlantic To Make Him (And The Recording) Sound More Sympathetic - Using The Word "Handsomest" Instead Of "Ugliest" Teacher "I Ever Did See". They Got Their Own Back However, Three Years Later Recording "I Shot Mr.Lee" For A Rival Record Company After Atlantic Terminated Their Contract Because Of Falling Record Sales.
