The Byrds Unreleased 8 inch 45 rpm Acetate for the song "Citizen Kane" from the 1971 "Byrdmaniax" LP
This is an 8 inch acetate single for the song “Citizen Kane’ by the Byrds from the album “Byrdmaniax” in the year 1971. The totally desirable aspect concerning this acetate is that the version of the “Citizen Kane” on this acetate is completely different from the released version on the album. I believe that the version on the acetate is the version of the completed song before Terry Melcher produced it. Many Byrds listeners and collectors believe that Terry Melcher over produced many or all of the songs on the album “Byrdmaniax” . According to my research, this opinion was probably shared by at least some of the members of the band as well.
If you listen to the sample of the song provided, you will find that this version is far simpler and easier to listen to. This acetate version lacks the “ Tin Pan Alley” production of the released version. In my opinion, the acetate version is far superior.
The condition of the acetate is a strong VG. One of the edges of the acetate is slightly warped but the warping is not so bad that it distorts sound or prevents playing the acetate provided the stylus weighs at least 2.5 grams. This acetate is a true Byrds rarity.
