Description
The Castelles blue label 45rpm on Grand Records from 1954.
The Castelles, a very early R&B/Doo Wop vocal group comprised primarily of tenors and a bass singer, were considered the pioneers of the "Philly Sound", and were followed mostly by listeners in the Mid-Eastern Region of the United States, Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Washington D.C.
The group never attained national recognition, but when you listen to these very early R&B/Doo Wop recordings, it is easy to hear the beauty of a new sound being born. The high tenor voice lead singers that would follow from this beginning, are today, the who's who of early rock & roll.
This is the Blue Label, Grand Records pressing, of record 109 from 1954, Over A cup Of Coffee, w/b Baby Can't You See, by The Castelles.
After researching and assessing vintage record collectors rating systems I believe and feel comfortable in judging this record as follows:
VG+ = a nice, but used record with a series of light scuffs or scratches on both sides. It plays very good on both sides, with a few pops, but has no serious problems.
The A side label is "Over A Cup Of Coffee", printed with 4115 and Slotkin Music.
The B side label is "Baby Can't You See", printed with 4116 and Slotkin Music.
The Castelles and 109 are printed under the title on each side.
The record has 4115 on the A side and 4116 on the B Side etched into the playoff area, as well as a small diamond with the letter E inside on each side.
The record still has a fairly nice gloss and I have played both sides several times and the sound remains very clear with moderate surface noise as described above.
The A side, Over A Cup Of Coffe, is a heartfelt slow tune with light instrumental backing.
The B side, Baby Can't You See, is a spirited, almost jazzy, fast tune with much more dominant instrumentation and a long bridge, something that was not done much latter on in 45's.
The label has no tears, stickers or markings of any kind on either side. It appears that the past owners prefered the B side, because the A side was down on the turntable more frequently.
