The Channels "The Closer You Are"/"Now You Know" 1956

VERY RARE Regional Hit Recording On Whirlin Disc Records, 500/501

The Channels released their regional hit recording, "The Closer You Are," in 1956 on legendary producer Bobby Robinson's early label, Whirlin Disc Records.  One year after this single's release, Robinson set up Fury Records, followed by Enjoy Records in 1962, which went on to record artists as varied as Lightnin' Hopkins and Grandmaster Flash.  The Channels achieved their only small-time hit with "The Closer You Are" and never produced a nationwide success, making this record particularly hard to find.  Years later, Frank Zappa recorded a cover of the song.  This record is very old and does have some minor scratches.  These scratches, however, only result in slight surface noise on the recording; there are no skips or breaks on this record.  It is very playable and would be an important addition to the refined collector's R&B collection!
