The Cold were the most popular band in New Orleans from 1980 to 1985. They evolved from a band called "Totally Cold," whose name was a play on the Olivia Newton-John album Totally Hot. As simply "The Cold," they played the top venues in the New Orleans area with their power pop/New Wave style. The Cold were Barbara Menendez (keyboards), Kevin Radecker (lead guitar), Bert Smith (rhythm guitar), Vance DeGeneres (bass), and Chris Luckette (drums). They released five singles and two albums on their Top Pop label before breaking up without ever landing a recording contract. DeGeneres continued with other bands and on the Comedy Central TV network, but his sister Ellen became the big star as a comedian and talk show host. Menendez married, raised a family, and occasionally performed in bands, accompanied by her son playing bass. She has recently published a vegan cookbook of adapted New Orleans classic dishes.
