Description
Beautiful early example of The Doors self-titled (EKS-74007) debut album. Released in the U.S. in January of 1967, this particular copy is quite desirable not only because of the record's condition but also because of the inclusion of an early Elektra Records Catalog found inside the jacket. Rare as they are, I have come across a few of these over the last few decades. However, what makes this one a little special is the fact that it only lists The Doors' 1st album [in Mono/Stereo]. All the other catalogs I've seen have their 2nd and 3rd albums listed as well. So there is no doubt that this catalog corresponds to this early pressing and placed inside prior to the jacket being shrink wrapped.
Another detail which makes this pressing unique and may indicate that this is indeed an earlier pressing is the word "NEW" etched into the [Side 1] deadwax area (see photo) which I've only seen one other time. Could this possibly indicate a new master...or new artist...or a new stamper?? A date of "9 - 67" is also (very faintly) hand-etched in the deadwax areas to both sides. The playback from this pressing is among the best I've heard for this album.....balanced....clear....sharp...and distortion-free. All the things you'd expect from an original 1967 pressing.
Cover: Very Good +(+).....in fact, 85% of the cover is in superb condition but is slightly let down due to an inoffensive streak of discoloration running down along the opening edge of the jacket. This was probably caused by the original owner taping the shrink wrap onto the cardboard and then removing it after 45 years or so. Spine is very nice without any significant wear. Colors are still vivid and bold. Have a good look at both pictures of the jacket.
Original Inner-Sleeve: Excellent (minus).....textured and bright....in beautiful condition with only 2 small splits. A higher quality inner will be included to house the precious record.
Elektra Records Catalog: Near Mint.....double-sided, 5-panel fold-out printed catalog in exceptional condition. Almost miraculous that it doesn't have any marks, stains or rips after 50 plus years.
Record: Near Mint(minus) .....rigid and heavy vinyl....under bright lights one can make out some hairlines, scuff lines and other marks. But most if not all are superficial in nature and have no significant bearing to the audio....which is really fantastic. I literally heard 3 or 4 "ticks" during the entire playback. As most collectors know, it is quite a challenge to find an original 1967 pressing of this album in this kind of condition.
