Description
The Doors sensational debut album (EKS-74007) from January 1967. This copy dates from the initial January release date and was pressed at the Monarch pressing plant in Los Angeles, CA. It contains All 3 first press indicators (label spelling error in 1st song, Witmark ASCAP credits for 'Alabama Song', earliest Matrix numbers in deadwax) and what's more, comes with the earliest Elektra Records inner-sleeve with ' 7 Poland Street' rather than '2 Dean Street' printed at the bottom. A very difficult copy to come by.
Though the record is not in archival Near Mint condition it is still quite challenging to find in ANY condition and that is why it is being offered for the true fan and collector. That said, there are still a couple of songs which, when play-graded, reached a solid VG+ and even higher. Case in point: 'Light My Fire'. This song grades a full Excellent and sounds truly amazing. In fact, it is THE BEST sounding version from a vintage 1st pressing of this album that I have ever heard (and believe me folks...I've heard hundreds of pressings of this album)
Cover: VG+.....a fine example with some inoffensive creases in some areas....a bit of edge and ring wear...colors are still quite vivid. For a cover of this age it is in more than acceptable shape. Please examine the photos with the zoom feature to have a better idea of its condition.
Original Inner-Sleeve: Ex.....made of slightly thicker paper than later examples....distinctive matt-texturing....unique "fold-over" design on one side (shown in photo) ...seam split at bottom which can be easily repaired if one desires. As mentioned previously, the UK Elektra Records address printed at the bottom (7 Poland Street) confirms this to be the earliest variant inner-sleeve for the U.S release.
Record: Fair ~ Good+ (though several songs grade higher)....going by strict 'Record Collector's Rare Record Price Guide' grading system. I rarely offer a record with this type of grading for sale unless it is a highly influential and exceptional album which this most definitely is. Record is pressed on thick and heavy vinyl...and both labels are clean and have a lovely gold-amber coloring which at certain angles have an almost metallic sheen. You will hear some surface noise and light ticks during playback but not to the degree of wanting to stop listening. It is still a very enjoyable listen and as mentioned earlier, to my ears, 'Light My Fire' has NEVER sounded as vibrant and alive (Manzarek's keyboard in particular) as it does on this pressing.
