Record Grading Scale

Records are graded visually under direct bright lighting. Groove wear is evaluated visually, and on occasion verified by audiophile play test. I am an experienced grader and audio enthusiast, however grading is a subjective evaluation. If you disagree with the grading of your record, please let me know.

M "Mint"  is mostly for display and collector value as a sealed package (ss) with no shelf wear on the cover and shrink. The record inside is assumed mint. Mint can be for opened records, preferably photographed sealed and opened for inspection. The record should appear pristine, no inner sleeve scuffing.

NM "Near mint",  the record appears brand new, perhaps unplayed.

NM plays exactly like a brand new record, The surface may have a small inaudible sleeve scuff or two, as sometimes found on a new, just opened record.

EX "excellent" may exhibit a few minor surface flaws but has no visible groove wear. EX plays beautifully without any distortion of sound. Background noise will be minimal, perhaps no more than a few light ticks between tracks, obviously a record played infrequently and/or played on high quality equipment.

VG+ "very good plus" may display minor surface scratches and indications the record was previously played. Not all VG+ will have surface scratches, but may indicate the first sign of groove wear. VG+ plays almost perfectly with the possibility of intermittent distortion, when played on a high resolution high quality system. On a juke or record changer, (lower resolution) VG+ should play the same as the higher grades. The background noise will be very low. The label may have a spindle trail, or slight spindle wear.

VG "Very good" is the typical used record with some expected surface wear and groove wear. Not all VG will have surface wear or scratches, but may indicate some visible groove wear. The label may have indications of wear and spindle wear may also be present, an indication the record was played more frequently on a record changer. VG may produce some noise and distortion, but well below normal music level.  

VG- "Very good minus" I do not offer this grade, as there will be more obvious surface wear and groove wear. At this point, the record suffers significant fidelity loss and added noise which may be to some, uncomfortable to listen to.

G  "good"  I do not offer this grade, however "good" plays through the continuous groove without skipping, (thus said to be good) Otherwise in the world of records, a good record does not sound so well. Quality of play may vary from acceptable to bad, depending on the quality of the record player, better quality (high rez) equipment reveals more flaws and distortion from wear. 

"Bad" is not good, may fail to play properly, may be cracked or chipped, or produces more noise than music, loud crackles and hiss, a worn out record.

My grading scale is based upon the Goldmine standard, enhanced to describe groove condition for the hi fidelity enthusiast. All records are graded visually under intense direct lighting. Some records will be play graded. Play grade will always be on a high resolution audiophile system, cartridge and stylus specified, so the buyer can make a more informed decision.
