Original very early 1st US Mono pressing of The Doors’ self-titled debut album released by Elektra Records in the early January, 1967. The currently listed copy is uncensored and contains a distinct series of hysterical “F*ck”s repeated by Jim Morrison on “The End” track. Based on the red “For Adults Only Not For Airplay” sticker affixed to the shrink wrap at the top of the front cover this copy got into the age restriction category and couldn’t be played at a radio station. Very often in the 1960s, when the album contained explicit content, record companies, including Elektra Records, indicated it either directly on the cover or affixed a specialized sticker, just like in the case with this copy. Finding a withdrawn uncensored copy of this issue is incredibly hard. 1st print Stereo cover contains a red “Mono” sticker at the bottom right corner underneath the shrink wrap. Very early uncensored Monarch, LA plant pressing with the misprint labels indicating the 1st track as “Break On Through (To The Oher Side). Original 1st print Elektra Records gold labels contain the 2⅞” pressing ring and a bold “Mono” banner, unique to the Monarch pressing, the “EKL-4007” catalog number and feature a "(Weill-Brecht) Witmark (ASCAP)" publishing credit for “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)” on Side 1 which was changed to "(Weill-Brecht) Harms Co. (ASCAP)" on the reissues. The vinyl pressed at the Monarch, LA plant contains the “(Mon)” abbreviation, “MR in a Circle” stamp and Delta (△) numbers in the runout grooves on both sides. Mastered by the engineer Ray Hagerty as identified by his initials in the trail-off vinyl on both sides, the vinyl has the following 1st matrix numbers: Side 1 - EKL-4007A (Mon) "MR in a Circle" Δ10046 (Ray Hagerty's signature); Side 2 – EKL-4007B (Mon) “MR in a Circle” Δ10046-X (Ray Hagerty's signature). The album comes with the very rare original Elektra “E” logo white / gold inner sleeve containing the “7 Poland St” address as oppose to “2 Dean St” present on the inner sleeves that came with the later copies of the album.

The cover of this uncensored copy is in amazing Near Mint condition, practically Mint Minus, remaining in its original fully intact factory shrink wrap. We grade the vinyl as somewhere between Very Good and Very Good Plus for Side 1 and Very Good for Side 2. It retains its glossy factory lacquer but has surface marks and hairlines in addition to some scuffs from the original paper inner sleeve, which is in Near Mint condition and doesn't have any splits or tears. The gold labels are very clean and in Near Mint Minus condition, wear- and scuff-free, with the Side Two label only having a few very light spindle marks visible under a strong light. The vinyl plays well with some light static and occasional background noise. There is a light skip at the start of Side 1. Perhaps, changing the weight of your phonograph's tonearm will solve this issue. Likewise, the static and background noise might get reduced or go away if the record is professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
