Description
Selling a super rare first pressing of the first LP, Mendelssohn’s Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. Published by Columbia Masterworks on 220 gram “nonbreakable” vinyl in June 1948, ML4001 is the first long-playing 12” record. Using Columbia’s new “Microgroove” technology, these records were capable of about 23 minutes per side, allowing for longer works to be published on one disc. This copy of the record is one of the first pressings, coming in the paper sleeve which was replaced with a stiffer cardboard sleeve in later years, making it one of the few copies of this record still in existence.
Having played the record through I’m grading it a G/G+ with consistent surface noise throughout both sides. There are no significant scratches on the record surface itself, so I have to conclude the noise is debris. I had this cleaned at a local record shop where they used a vacuum brush cleaner, but I would recommend an ultrasonic cleaning to get as much of the remaining debris out of the grooves as possible.
The sleeve is cosmetically in decent shape considering it’s 70 years old. One side is torn at the seam about half way down, but other than that, it looks very nice. That being said, I don’t trust paper sleeves, so the record will come to you in a plastic sleeve separate from the paper sleeve. Both will be included, but I’ve been storing it in the plastic sleeve to ensure no more debris ends up on this disc.
