God Machine - One Last Laugh In A Place Of Dying LP FIXH 27 (Fiction, UK, 1994)
Original Limited Edition Release - numbered 0896.
A storm of an LP, which will be recognised as an all-time great, it's just a question of when. The howling shapes herein would influence the dynamics of post rock groups such as Mogwai, and the harrowing narratives recall the more personal material of The Manic's Holy Bible. The album's has been out of print most of the time since, and vinyl copies are very hard to come by. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.
Condition (I Grade NM / EX / VG+ / VG / VG- / G / F)
Sleeve - (CONDITION) VG - The white sleeve, like so many of this album, has faded, and it is also quite marked with age and stained. There's also creases and corner wear. Spine is ok and still legible. No splits. Inner similarly marked and has corner wear. There is a bit of paper stuck to the text.
Record - (CONDITION) VG The record has been played quite a bit. Label has similar marks to the sleeve, and spindlewear. The record itself has quite a few light scratches and scuffs. On play, there is quite a bit of crackle and pops - The record, being quite long, (and with lots of dynamic) is cut very low, so you really have to turn the volume up. This means that the crackle (even a little dust) is really noticeable, mostly in the quiet bits.
It is a question really, of how much this bothers you. Musically, this still packs a punch, especially turned up loud - quite open and incredibly dynamic. Much more heart-churning than the CD. Even just grading the record has been quite an absorbing experience - so it clearly still has that power. If you are not so bothered with crackle and the odd pop, I think you, like me, will find this worthwhile. There are absolutely nothing here that causes anything like a skip or a jump.
I ALSO will point out I don't really have very adequate facility to clean my records perfectly (i have a cloth, isopropyl and distilled water at hand) - and a deep clean with a VPI or Knosti might get rid of some of the crackle and pops.
