Record: NM. pristine vinyl - plays clean with great presence  Cover: VG+. Overall signs of wear/age + creasing on corner


Recorded 10-22-1975, The brothers from Philly join forces to perform Jimmy’s charts with his flute, Tenor and soprano. Brother Percy performs on Bass and Cello in homage to his mentor Oscar Pettiford while “Tootie’s” crisp percussion skills provide strong and elegant support. Joining the Brothers is the multi-talented master bassist Stanley Cowell who, along with his partner Charles Tolliver, co-founded the Strata-East Label. This time Stanley cedes bass duties to Percy while he assumes acoustic piano and Mbira (African thumb piano) duties.


Side one features tunes by Ellington, originals by Tootie, Percy and one from Stanley while Side two features Jimmy’s four movement: “Smilin’ Billy Suite".  If you like original post-bop compositions, Jimmy was right there as a player, arranger (for the likes of Miles Davis and others) during the late 50’s through the 60’s and 70’s. Full of innovative performances, this album is guaranteed to become a personal favorite.
(Interestingly, elements within this album were sampled by hip-hop artist Nas on his landmark 1994 debut album ILLMATIC)
