Description

Original US pressing on the Home of the hits label from 1976. The sleeve is in EX condition and the record is in NM condition.

Jonathan Richman's worldview certainly goes against the grain for the 70's. He hates drugs, loves his parents, glorifies the mundane beauties of suburbia, and wants a girlfriend, not casual sex. 
Jonathan sets this worldview to music over Velvety punk and Nuggety pop. His lyrics tread a fine line between earnest and moving, and just plain sappy. On tracks like Hospital and Girlfriend, he often errs towards the sappy side. On the other hand, the literate angst-ridden adventure of Astral Plane and the goofy fun on Roadrunner and Government Center  work quite well. A fun little adventure into the world of Jonathan Richman.

One of the great 'lost' albums in rock history, Modern Lovers offered listeners a bridge between the Velvet Undergroundand the birth of punk. It also introduced them to Jonathan Richman, a most underrated songwriter. The Modern Lovers' only proper album is actually a collection of demos recorded with John Cale in the early 70s. They were never released until 1976, by which time the band had long passed. The classictracks available here include 'Pablo Picasso', 'She Cracked' and 'Roadrunner', the subliminal influence at work behind Cornershop's 'Brimful Of Asha'. Richman's aching vocals, often seemingly on the point of collapse, provide the sort of direct emotional connection that great rock 'n' roll has always been about.
