The product of a group of newcomers, The Nervous Set originated in St. Louis, where it became the talk of the town, before it was whisked off to Broadway where it promptly disappeared, following its debut at the Henry Miller Theatre on May 12, 1959. The story of a dysfunctional marriage between the publisher of a magazine called “Nerves” and his wife, a self-professed beatnik, the show starred Richard Hayes and Tani Seitz as the hapless couple, and became a springboard for a couple of other talented newcomers, including Tom Aldredge, and Larry Hagman, who was to achieve fame and fortune in later years as J.R. in the TV series, Dallas. Written by Jay Landesman and Theodore J. Flicker, with songs by Tommy Wolf (music) and Fran Landesman (lyrics), the show hobbled along for 23 performances before calling it quits, but yielded an original cast album that has been one of the mainstays in the catalog.
