Zum Zeitpunkt seiner Veröffentlichung wurde LIFE AFTER DEATH - eine Fortsetzung von Biggies erstem Album READY TO DIE - als eines der besten Alben des Jahres 1997 bezeichnet und erhielt Grammy-Nominierungen für das beste Rap-Album, die beste Rap-Solo-Performance für "Hypnotize" und die beste Rap-Performance eines Duos oder einer Gruppe für "Mo Money Mo Problems". Inzwischen wurde es in Blenders 100 Greatest American Albums of All Time sowie in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time gelistet.
Wäre Christopher Wallace alias The Notorious B. I.G. noch am Leben, würde er am 21. Mai seinen 50. Geburtstag feiern. Sein Einfluss und seine Strahlkraft sind indes ungebrochen. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Nachlass von Christopher Wallace läuten die Labels Bad Boy, Rhino und Atlantic Records die Feierlichkeiten am 25. März 2022 ein, dem 25. Jahrestag von »Life After Death«, das 1997 veröffentlicht wurde. Als Teil der Feierlichkeiten wird außerdem sein episches Zweitwerk, das US-Diamant-ausgezeichnete und Grammy-nominierte Doppelalbum »Life After Death« als 25th Anniversary Super Deluxe Boxset veröffentlicht.
Das »Life After Death« 25th Anniversary Super Deluxe Boxset besteht aus 8 Vinyls und einem Erinnerungs-Booklet mit seltenen Fotos vom Album-Covershooting, Linernotes von Sheldon Pearce und exklusiven Schilderungen von Mitgliedern des Teams, das an der damaligen Albumveröffentlichung mitwirkte. Neben dem Originalalbum enthält die Box die 12‹-Singles ›Hypnotize‹, ›Mo Money Mo Problems‹, ›Sky's The Limit‹ und ›Nasty Boy‹.
Als ›Life After Death‹ kurz nach dem tragischen Ableben von The Notorious B. I.G. veröffentlicht wurde, schoss das Album direkt auf Platz 1 der Billboard Top 200, und nicht nur das: es war das erste Album überhaupt, das mit ›Hypnotize‹ und ›Mo Money Mo Problems‹ gleich zwei posthume #1-Singles in Folge hervorbrachte. In der Folge erntete das Werk u. a. eine Grammy-Nominierung in der Kategorie ›Best Rap Album‹, ›Hypnotize‹ wurde in der Kategorie ›Best Rap Solo Performance‹ bedacht und ›Mo Money Mo Problems‹ als ›Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group‹. To celebrate the 25th Anniversary on 25th March 2022, the diamond-certified GRAMMY®-nominated double-disc opus will be released as a 25th Anniversary Super Deluxe Box Set on June 10, 2022. The Life After Death 25th Anniversary Super Deluxe Boxed Set consists of 8-LPs and a commemorative booklet featuring rare photos from the album cover shoot, liner notes by Sheldon Pearce, and exclusive reflections from members of the team who worked on the original album release. In addition to the original album, it includes the Hypnotize 12", Mo Money Mo Problems 12", Sky's The Limit 12", and Nasty Boy 12".
Life After Death features 112, Jay-Z, Lil' Kim, Ma$e, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Too $hort, along with tracks like "Kick In The Door," "What's Beef," "Notorious Thugs," "Ten Crack Commandments" and "Sky's The Limit,". The album hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and the US Top R&B/Hip Hop chart. It went diamond in the U.S. alone, double platinum in Canada, and platinum in the UK. The album received a GRAMMY® nomination in the category of "Best Rap Album." "Hypnotize" earned a GRAMMY® nomination for "Best Rap Solo Performance," and "Mo Money Mo Problems" was nominated for "Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group." Among dozens of lists and retrospectives, Rolling Stone touted Life After Death among its coveted "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time." The RIAA has awarded the album a Diamond Certification for more than 5 million copies sold of the double-LP.
