Description
An original 1st issue of the STONES debut on the UK Decca label and would have been available for sale during the 1st month of release. Matrix 2A/5A. Please note this is NOT the very earliest pressing available - there is a 'Short Tell Me' version - which this copy is NOT.
The label has several errors which were altered on all subsequent issues. Firstly, and most notably, is the inclusion on the label of 'MONA' as all the DJ's knew it by that name - only problem is that's not the official track name! Track 3 is incorrectly showing the publishing credit 'Cromwell'. Track 1 is still showing as 'Route 66' - without the additional 'Get Your Kicks' which would appear only a couple of months later. On Side two track 4 publishing credit reads 'Bozier' when it should read 'Dozier'.
The heavy set vinyl comes housed in an original MacNeill press flipback 1st issue sleeve. So, the very 1st sleeves are easily identified by two further errors...1) 'Mona' shows as track 4 2) 'You can Make It If You Try' - is missing the 'IF'. Also included is an original red Mono Decca company inner from the late-60's.
Vinyl (Ex-/Vg+) In great shape for a true original 1st issue from 1964. It is has seen moderate use, but looks in pretty decent condition with a few marks - nothing heavy though. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly NEAR EXCELLENT level of playback with one deviation. Intros and inbetweens are nice and quiet and the audio comes across with great clarity. Pretty impressive for a copy of this age and a thoroughly enjoyable rendition as you'd expect from a nice solid early copy. Great mono powering through with relatively minor isolated interference. Do expect a few crackles in the odd place and a couple of pops in 'YCMIIYT'. The deviation mentioned above relates to a few audible clicks mainly in the second half of 'King Bee'. But by and large audio performance is close on excellent level for the most part. And believe me that's no mean achievement on a true early copy like this.
Cover (Vg+) So so difficult to find even in close to Ex condition - this example is way better than the typical standard that usually surfaces. Lovely clean front without laminate lift. There's a few creases - but nothing really unsightly. The rear, often the problem area, is really quite superb. It seems to have largely avoided the ageing process and all we can make out are the remnants of a light stain at the opening. Edge wear is reasonably light and nothing unsightly. There are a few stress creases on the spine, but all the text is still visible. Overall the cover still retains very good rigidity and remains an impressive example of this true 1st issue.
Inner (Ex+) Barely any ageing. No splits.
