Great-Sounding Classical LPs That Aren’t on HP’s Superdisc List, Jonathan Valin. Let’s face it: There isn’t a digital format—perfect-sounding forever or foreverer, five stars or six—that stores as much musical information as a vinyl record. To encourage more of you to take the analog plunge, some old friends (Mark Lehman, Jim Bradford, and Scott Brown) and I have put together a list of great-sounding LPs that have been previously overlooked by TAS. we think of as supplements to HP’s celebrated LP Superdiscs. The Royal Ballet Gala Performance. Ansermet, Royal Opera House Orchestra. LDS-6065 This is, after all, the rarest and mostly highly esteemed (sonically) of all RCA recordings (though, like so many other great RCAs, it is, in fact, a Decca recording licensed by RCA). The sound here in every version I’ve ever heard, from the original Sorias to the earlier Classic reissues to the CDs, has always been phenomenal.
