Description
The experience of buying records on Ebay is ruined if, when they arrive, you discover that they are either not in the condition stated or have been damaged in the post! For this reason I describe the condition of all my items in detail, and only post using strong sturdy packaging. They are also from a non-smoking and pet-free home.
The Smiths - Full Set of UK 12" Single Releases: 1983 - 1987
This auction is for 16 Smiths 12" vinyl singles which are, of course, all original Rough Trade releases. All of the UK releases are here, not counting the sleeve variations and remix version of 'This Charming Man' (which are to be auctioned another day). These 12" singles have become increasing rare in recent times and it is becoming extremely difficult to find examples in a suitable condition, such as these are, that you would want in your collection. These singles have been carefully collected by myself over a number of years and many were bought at record fairs years ago when it was still possible to find Smiths vinyl on sale in near-mint condition. You just cannot find records like these anymore and consequently those in great condition have risen sharply in value, particularly in one or two cases where the 12"s seem to be much rarer than the others. All of these singles are in their original picture sleeves with their original inner sleeves, and have been carefully looked after. Unlike some auctions of this type, this is not an excuse to sell sub-standard condition 12"s by virtue of the fact that they are a full set! The remarkable thing about this auction is that these 12" singles, even after more than 20 years, are all in outstanding condition. Many are near mint and the rest are in at least excellent or strong excellent condition (full details below). There is no writing, tears or other damage on any of the sleeves and no scratches on any of the vinyl.
These are very heavy, but due to surprising ebay rules about limiting postage I have to charge no more than 4.00 for UK postage. I will honour this limit, even though it will cost me more to send them, and have decided to extend this courtesy to other forms of postage (though I may live to regret this!). Special delivery will be only 5.20 in the UK and overseas postage is also hugely discounted (see drop-down box below). These postage rates offer extremely good value compared to the astronomical cost of buying and having them posted individually, particularly if you are an overseas bidder.
The condition in detail is as follows:
'This Charming Man' (Cat: RTT 136): The vinyl is in near mint condition, with, astonishingly, no visible surface marks at all, not even when the record is held to the light. This record has been played only a handful of times and was issued in a plain white inner sleeve. The outer picture sleeve is also in near mint condition, retaining its orginal smooth and glossy appearance. The edges are sharp and there is only very very minor corner wear, with no noticeable creases at all.
'What Difference (Terence Stamp Sleeve)' (Cat: RTT 146): The vinyl is in near mint condition, to my knowledge having only been played once from new. There are no surface marks at all, not even 'hairline' marks when the record is held up to the light. The record was issued in a plain white inner sleeve. The outer picture sleeve is in strong excellent condition with no real signs of wear at all, just one minor crease towards one corner. The sleeve remains glossy, having no significant marks and sharp edges with very minor corner wear.
'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' (Cat: RTT 156): The vinyl is in strong excellent condition, remaining glossy with only light 'hairline' surface marks in a few places. The record has been played but well looked after and is in its plain white inner sleeve. The outer picture sleeve is in excellent condition, with just one or two very mild small creases at the edges but no major creases. There is some minor corner wear and some very light surface 'score' marks in places on the reverse which do not break deep into the surface and are seen if the sleeve is held to the light.
'William It Was Really Nothing' (Cat: RTT 166): The vinyl is in near mint condition, being very glossy and having been played no more than once or twice. There are only a few very light 'hairline' surface marks which become visible if held to the light. A terrific example in its white inner sleeve. The outer picture sleeve is also in near mint condition, with sharp edges and only very minor corner wear. There is only one minor unobtrusive crease towards the lower front edge.
'How Soon Is Now' (Cat: RTT 176): The vinyl is in near mint condition, being very glossy and having no surface or 'hairline' marks at all. This is in beautiful condition, having been played only once or twice. This is as-issued in its white inner sleeve. The outer picture sleeve is in excellent condition, with some corner wear and very mild 'ring wear'. There are no creases and one very small white mark on the front of the sleeve.
'Shakespeare's Sister' (Cat: RTT 181): The vinyl is in near mint condition, being very glossy and having been played only a few times. There are just a few very light 'hairline' surface marks which can be seen if the record is held to the light. The impressive 'picture' inner sleeve is also in near mint condition. The outer picture sleeve is in strong excellent condition, remaining glossy in appearance with sharp edges. There is some very minor corner wear and the smallest of very light creases near the top edge but no major creases at all.
'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore' (Cat: RTT 186): The vinyl is in excellent condition, with only very light scuff/'hairline' surface marks which can be seen only if the record is held up to the light. The record has been played only a handful of times and has been looked after very well. The 'pink'-coloured inner sleeve is in undamaged excellent condition. The picture outer sleeve is in strong excellent condition, with some very minor corner wear but no creases. The edges are sharp and the original red sticker on the front is unmarked.
'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' (Cat: RTT 191): The vinyl is again in excellent condition, with just a few very light scuff/'hairline' surface marks which are seen if the record is held to the light. The record looks to have been played just a few times. The 'orange'-coloured inner sleeve is unmarked and in strong excellent condition. The outer picture sleeve is in strong excellent condition, with sharp edges and only minor corner wear. The sleeve is glossy and has only one or two small light creases towards the edges which are not noticeable.
'Bigmouth Strikes Again' (Cat: RTT 192): The vinyl is in near mint condition, being very glossy and new in appearance and hardly played. There are just a few of the lightest of 'hairline' surface marks which become visible if held to the light. The 'purple'-coloured inner sleeve is intact and in excellent condition. The outer picture sleeve is in excellent condition, with just some minor corner and edge wear but no other damage or creases. The original cover sticker is present and unmarked.
'Panic' (Cat: RTT 193): The vinyl is in near mint condition, having been played just once or twice. There a few very light 'hairline' surface marks which can be seen only if the record is held to the light. The 'light blue' inner sleeve is in strong excellent condition with just one small (1 inch) split in one edge. The outer picture sleeve is in strong excellent condition, being completely flat and glossy with sharp edges. There is some very minor corner wear and no creases.
'Ask' (Cat: RTT 194): The vinyl is in near mint condition and looks unplayed. There are just one or two of the lightest of 'hairline' surface marks which can be seen if the record is held to the light. The original 'pink/red' inner sleeve is also in near mint condition. The picture outer sleeve is glossy and in near mint condition, with no significant creases and only very minor edge/corner wear.
'Shoplifters Of The World Unite' (Cat: RTT 195): The vinyl is again in near mint condition and looks unplayed with just a few very light 'hairline' surface marks which can be seen if the record is held to the light. The original 'pink/red' inner sleeve is in strong excellent condition with one minor crease. The outer picture sleeve is flat, glossy and in strong excellent condition. There are no creases but one very small corner split and the beginning of a small seam split on the top edge. Otherwise the edges are sharp and there is very little wear to the corners.
'Sheila Take A Bow' (Cat: RTT 196): The vinyl is in near mint condition, being glossy in appearance and having been played once. There are just one or two very light 'hairline' surface marks. The original picture inner sleeve is in impressive near mint condition. The picture outer sleeve is also in near mint condition, having no signs of wear or creases at all and being as-new in appearance.
'Girlfriend In A Coma' (Cat: RTT 197): The vinyl is in strong excellent condition, and has been played a few times but is glossy and well looked after. There are a few light 'hairline' surface marks on the vinyl only. The original 'black' coloured inner sleeve is in excellent condition with just a few light surface marks. The outer picture sleeve is in excellent condition, with some very light small creases towards the edges and a very small area of damage in one corner where the surface of the sleeve has come away.
'I Started Something I Couldn't Finish' (Cat: RTT 198): The vinyl is in strong excellent condition with only a few very light 'hairline' surface marks. This has barely been played. The original 'green' inner sleeve is in excellent condition with just one split in the middle of one edge. The outer picture sleeve is in near mint condition, with no creases or any other significant signs of wear. A very nice example.
'Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me' (Cat: RTT 200): The vinyl is in near mint condition, being highly glossy and having been played only once. There are just a few extremely light 'hairline' surface marks in places. The original 'black' inner sleeve is in strong excellent condition, with just the lightest of surface marks. The picture outer sleeve is near mint with sharp corners and edges with no signs of wear or creases at all! This very difficult to obtain 12" is effectively in as-new condition.
The new owner should be very happy with these essential Smiths releases on now-increasingly-rare vinyl.
