Description

THIS is an original, official poster measuring approximately 24" x 12" (60 x 30cm) that was printed for Rough Trade in 1986 to promote The Smiths’ non album single Panic.

Please see below for a detailed description of the condition.

PLEASE VIEW MY OTHER ITEMS FOR IMMEDIATE SALE & AUCTION. FREE POSTAGE on an UNLIMITED number of additional items.  Please see information below for details of this offer.

Every single and album released during the The Smiths' prolific four year recording lifespan was promoted by a poster that used the same image as the record. Each was designed by Morrissey himself and Rough Trade’s Jo Smee.

These posters have become highly collectable, not least because most were a generic size and all a similar style, featuring a duotone photograph of a star from film, television or popular culture. Morrissey’s artwork of the icons has itself become iconic.

Due to the desirability of artefacts relating to the most important British band of the 1980s there have been bootleg reproductions of these posters, often with different dimensions. However, the ones I’m listing are original (please see the ‘provenance’ section below). You can be assured by the fact that my current and past listings have all been original promotional posters from the ‘80s and ’90s, few of which (if any) have ever been reprinted or reproduced. Coincidentally I was collecting and accumulating promo posters by artists on independent labels from around the time of The Smiths’ debut single ‘Hand In Glove’. None of my Smiths posters have been bought from other collectors/dealers so none has appeared previously on eBay.

I shall be listing two or three posters from my highly prized Smiths collection every month for the next year or so, in random order. I don’t have all of them, but perhaps most.

CONDITION:

This vintage poster was used in a shop window display 30 years ago. I’ll describe the imperfections in as much detail as I can, but a close examination of the photo using the zoom function is equally useful.

There's a fold right across on the lower 1 cm of 'SMITHS', resulting in some white marks from lost print, also white marks on the upper half of the 'H'.

Further 2.5 cm horizontal white mark from left edge beginning 2.5 cm down from top, which a small black mark on the 'S' close to where this white mark ends. Some slight crumpling across the whole of this top section.

Fold across at 29.5 cm down from top (not factory fold).

Horizontal fold for 17 cm across from right edge at 25 cm down from top right with resulting white mark.

Small fold of 6 cm at about 27 cm down from top right, beginning 1 cm in from edge.

Some crumpling/handling marks down the top half of the right edge.

Further horizontal fold of 19 cm beginning on left edge 16 cm up from bottom and further crease 1.5 cm below it of 7 cm, both resulting in white marks.

Crease of 2 cm across bottom left corner with white mark and some crumpling and white marks around the area at the end of 'CARTEL' (at the bottom of the poster).

Small white mark just before 'WITH' and small white marks, but no crease in the bottom left corner.

'SMITHS PANIC' is written on the reverse side of the poster in the top right corner but is not visible from the front.

Despite the forensic detail noted above you’ll see that the overall impression of the poster is pretty good!
All four corners are pointed, three of the four sides are sharp and undamaged, and there are no tears or pin/staple holes.

PLEASE carefully examine the photograph using the zoom function. The photo forms part of the item description, particularly with regard to its condition.

PROVENANCE: All of my Smiths posters were sourced from the Rough Trade 'Chain With No Name' shop Ugly Child Records, Walthamstow, London between 1984 and 1987. They were each from a one-off print run for the record label and were never on sale to the public. The photograph is of the actual item. All the items I list will be on a similar coloured background so that you know they are my own photos.
