Up for sale today is a lovely copy of the first and arguably best album by the British Psychedelic legends The Soft Machine. The album was for some reason only released initially in the United States on the Probe Label in 1968 - CPLP-4500 - Stereo. Heavy Vinyl in Very Good plus condition with hardly any spindle wear and a few scuff marks - sounds a tiny bit crackly in parts. The fold out stiff card American style cover has ripped at the top across the top middle - the rotating wheel inside the front cover is intact and still rotates. See also original owners name in biro. I cant quite believe that some copies of this album were censored at the time as it really isn't that rude and the naked lady pictured on the inner right hand cover is clearly a painting - but there you go, a bit of an over reaction in my opinion. Cover is graded at Good plus - downgraded due to rip and pen marks but still fully intact. Serious collectors have to buy both the censored and uncensored copies to complete their collections (I am not one of them). I don't know why this great album by the pioneering acid head legendary British Psychedelic groups only got a U.S. release but that's what happened. Jimi Hendrix was a fan of the band and they toured with him in the late 1960s and that has to be a good job reference initself. All three members of the band were bloody legends - Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt and the late Kevin Ayers. Fanatical record collector Elton John talks about the frustration of Soft Machines British fans at having to buy this album on Import when it came out and later regretted selling the album as part of a huge collection to raise funds for his Aids charity (useful or useless information?). The music on this seminal album can at first be a little hard to listen to but persevere and it becomes addictive and I for one have to say this music really stands the test of time. Their first two albums sound like nothing else around (or did at the time) and their concerts at U.F.O. in London alongside Pink Floyd were truly mind blowing, according to those fortunate to have been there - although I guess the audiences were ingesting huge quantities of Acid so maybe their judgement was somewhat clouded. Track two on side one contains the Kevin Ayers track Joy of a Toy - the name of his brilliant solo album. Sorry for rambling on a bit - please see scans and ask me questions.
