Definitely one for the collectors!
Here is a lovely surviving copy of the debut single from Blackburn’s punk band, The Stiffs.
Released in 1979 on their own Dork Records.
Very much our local band, we watched them in their earliest days rehearsing in St Mary’s, the local 6th form college.
They soon became the darlings of influential Radio 1 DJ John Peel who championed their follow-up single, Inside Out.
Before that however, came this debut E.P.
The story behind the flip side track, Brookside Riot Squad, may be apocryphal, but hey, it’s worth the telling. When the band were working up the song, it was tentatively called “Riot Squad”. Someone persuaded Hendriks & co that there would be guaranteed extra sales if it included “Brookside”
Named after some white painted graffiti daubed on an electricity substation wall at the edge of Knuzden Brook.
The irony being that the locality was hardly the dangerous, violent no-go area depicted in the song! We were a bunch of upper-working class kids from a new-ish estate on the outskirts of Blackburn!!
The song is an absolute gem though. The instrumental second half being very reminiscent of Pete Perrett and The Only Ones’ Another Girl, Another Planet.
Rare as hen’s teeth!

Vinyl: Ex (minor condition issue so please read carefully) - A lovely clean surviving copy. Some very light superficial hairline surface marks but still retains a nice deep lustre and sheen. Play-tested in full and the A-side is fine. The B-side however, does have an audible click. The sound comes in around 30 seconds from the end and the click lasts for only two revolutions. Apart from this very minor issue and a little dust crackle on the run-ins and outs, it’s a great listen.
The labels are what becomes a Dork company design - white cross on coloured background. Labels are nice and clean with minimal spindle-wear on a solid-centred disc.
Sleeve: VG. Showing signs of age, this is an ultra scarce thin paper die-cut with the same design motif, half red, half blue. This design would become a feature of their future releases.
The sleeve is intact with no splits or tears, but it has some edge staining.
So there it is - a genuine collectors item. The last one I saw on this site just went for three figures!
