The Ugly Ducklings – Somewhere Outside, released in 1966, is a raw, electrifying blast of garage rock and proto-punk energy, and arguably one of the greatest Canadian rock albums of the 1960s. Hailing from Toronto, The Ugly Ducklings were part of the same primal wave of mid-’60s bands that blended British Invasion swagger with American R&B grit, but they brought their own uniquely snotty attitude and sneering edge, setting them apart from both local contemporaries and international peers.
Somewhere Outside captures the group at the peak of their youthful fury and creativity. Drawing comparisons to The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, and The Pretty Things, the Ducklings channeled their influences into a distinctly Canadian countercultural voice. They were rebellious, stylish, and musically tight, but with just enough roughness around the edges to make them dangerous.
