The Velvet Underground & Nico 1979 Reissue Non-Peelable Banana Gatefold VG/VG.
For auction is a very good listeners copy of The Velvet Underground & Nico by American avant-garde rock band, The Velvet Underground. Their debut album released in March 1967, features German singer, songwriter, actress and model, Nico. The record’s cover was designed by iconic pop artist, Andy Warhol who also co-produced the album. Upon its release, The Velvet Underground & Nico was a commercial and critical failure. It sold poorly and most critics found it polarizing with a harsh sound and aggressive lyrics about controversial subjects such as drug use, prostitution, sadomasochism and paraphilia. Within the first five years of release, the album only sold 30,000 copies worldwide. Despite this, there were some who praised its haunting nature and avant-garde sound and as time passed, the album started to develop a cult following. A decade after its release, it started to attract wide praise and the impact it had was becoming more apparent. The iconic producer and musician, Brian Eno, famously said in a 1982 interview, “everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band”. Now considered one of the most important albums ever recorded, The Velvet Underground & Nico influenced many sub-genres of rock music such as punk, garage rock, post-punk, alternative, goth and indie-rock. It has been called, “the original art-rock record.” It has been cited on many lists as one of the best albums of all-time. In 2006, the Library of Congress deemed it culturally and historically significant and picked it for preservation by inducting the album into the National Recording Registry. In 2000, the album was voted #13 in Colin Larkin’s All Time Top 1000 Albums. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it #23 on their list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. This copy is a 1979 reissue with the non-peeling banana and no torso on back cover.
Vinyl is play graded VG. Slight storage warp that does not affect playback. Many visible surface marks but nothing deep that can be felt. Plays with mild background noise at times that is never overwhelming. No skips or jumps. Please see pics.
Gatefold cover is also in VG condition. Minor shelf wear on corners and seams. No dents and no splits. Title is perfectly legible. Ring wear on both sides. Stains on front, back and inside gatefold. Cover is warped which ultimately down graded it from VG+. Still super solid. Please see pics.
