This is a lovely copy of the very first press of the classic and highly desirable first major label release from Bob Marley and The Wailers, "Catch A Fire", Island, ILPS.9241, released in the UK in 1973. as a sign of faith in their new signing Island spared no expense on the sleeve adopting the instantly recognisable classic Z ippo design, unfortunately this was very expensive to manufacture and each half had to be joined together by hand, apparently only 20,000 copies were made before they switched to the alternate standard sleeve, the sleeve's design also makes it particularly fragile and easily damaged, the hinge also often gives leaving the sleeve in two parts. Of the 20,000 or so made there are two types, the first pressings came in a sleeve that I believe was made by Shorewood Packaging, this first type sleeve has the address "Basing St. London W11" below the Island "i" logo, this is not on the second type sleeve which were manufactured by Robor Limited, are generally a lighter hue and have less definition in the printing of the Z ippo case.

As with the sleeve their are variations with the vinyl, the original pink rim copies used a Sterling stamper and have the original proposed catalogue number, (BML 2001), crossed through and the ILPS 8241 number stamped in along with the codes for each stamper, there are later pink rim issues that use standard scratched Island matrices. The matrices of this copy are: STERLING BML 2001 A-3U ILPS 9241 A-3U AL

Since it's release this album has continued to gain in status and not only is it many peoples favourite Marley album, but it also recognised as amongst the greatest and most important. releases of any genre, it is essential in any collection and this is the pressing to own.

Visually the vinyl has perhaps 24 extremely feint scuffs on side A., side B has perhaps 30 very feint scuffs, these are very, very light scuffs and definitely not scratches, they have no effect on how the record plays, I actually have a copy that looks perfect, but doesn't sound as clean.

Play grading
Concrete Jungle plays excellently with minimal surface noise and one tiny crackle.
Slave Driver plays excellently with minimal surface noise.
400 Years plays excellently with just a touch of surface noise.
Stop that train plays excellently with just a touch of surface noise.
Baby We've Got A Date (Rock It Baby) plays excellently.
Stir It Up has a touch of surface noise at the start, otherwise it plays excellently with just a hint of surface noise and two tiny crackles.
Kinky Reggae plays excellently with minimal surface noise and one tiny crackle around the 30 seconds mark, (listen to the clip).
No More Trouble plays excellently with minimal surface noise.
Midnight Ravers plays excellently, just one tiny pop in the last three seconds of the fade-out.

The labels are both excellent with just a few spindle marks.

The sleeve has very slight wear, (see pictures), there is the imprint of some writing in the top right, unfortunately this didn't show up in the pictures, there is also slight wear to the edges and corners, on a positive note it has only a single small crease and the hinge is in perfect condition, this is a really nice copy of this complicated and easily damaged sleeve.
