Since surfacing in 2016, Tim "MAST" Conley has done an admirable job in joining the dots between experimental jazz, fusion and the Los Angeles beat-making scene within which he now operates. Even so, his latest full-length - a set of left-of-centre, experimental and out-there covers of Thelonious Monk classics - is still a step up from its predecessors. Interestingly, while each of the covers is distinguishable - by which we mean that you can tell which Monk cut is being reinvented - Conley and his assembled cast of musicians have done a fantastic job in putting a new angle on each. The results, then, are never less than hugely imaginative and colourful, with the producer's hybrid electronic/acoustic approach only enhancing the great man's fabled compositions.
