This quite rare LP from Polydor · Vox (PLP 6420, US pressing, black/silver microgroove label, mono) features the legendary Jacques Thibaud in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 in G K.216 (with cadenzas by Ysaye), recorded at the Salle Pleyel in Paris on 27 November 1947, one of his last commercial recordings before his tragic death. In it he is joined by the estimable Paul Paray and the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux. It is a remarkable reading: such characterful playing, with an authentically ‘French-sounding’ orchestra seconding the great violinist – a remarkable document of a great artist and a bygone era.

The companion offering is an equally rare, early appearance of the famed Loewenguth Quartet in Mozart’s early String Quartet in E flat Major K. 171. Founded in 1929, its members numbered 1st violinist Alfred Loewenguth, 2nd violinist Jacques Gotkovski, violist Roger Roche, and cellist Roger Loewenguth. They would go on to make a number of distinguished recordings for DG, but this Polydor disc even predates their association with the Yellow Label. Their account of the Mozart is a delight from start to finish, wonderfully pointed, buoyant, and warm. 

There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Peter Hugh Reed, printed in English only. The cover design is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the front laminated jacket is EXCELLENT. There is light shelfwear and mild discoloration, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears close to new. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
