This superb LP from Pathé (COLH 75, French pressing, red/silver Pathe label*, mono, dowel spine, “baguette” style jacket) features the first great – and still among the finest – accounts of Brahms Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra in A minor Op. 102 “Double”, that made by violinist Jacques Thibaud, cellist Pablo Casals, and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alfred Cortot. Recorded at the Palau de la Musica, Barcelona, on 5 May 1929 this is playing of a bygone age, a gramophone classic still fresh even 80 years on.

Filling out the disc is an equally valuable by these same forces of Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor Op. 49, set down at Queen’s Hall, London, on 20 June 1927.

* Note: The red/silver Pathe label is quite rare – I have never encountered it in this series. Incidentally, there are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Jean Cotté, printed in French only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a slight crack and a small bit of writing to the upper-right corner, and general wear and discoloration along the edges. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid and presentation worthy – overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the dowel spine is GOOD. The lower 4” of the dowel is beginning to separate on one side, but that is all. It still functions properly and there are no seamsplits to the paper sleeve.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
