Howdy! There's a lot to cover with this item, but if you read on and find you like it, you may be able to get this set at a steal. This is the limited edition metallized (gold/platinum) 2 LP special edition of The Great Gatsby soundtrack from Third Man Records. The LPs and inserts are contained inside 1 dual colored, laser-etched wooden "sleeve." This set was purchased at the Third Man store in Nashville on release day 5/10/13 (from the original offering of 100 sets), and therefore has never been shipped. Manufactured in Nashville at URP, assembled at Third Man, and kept in a closet 30 miles down the road from Nashville, TN. The records are UNPLAYED and have never come close to a turntable or needle, but there are some blemishes that are noted in the attached photos and description below. Please keep this in mind when bidding.
Using the provided archival cotton gloves, I took the records out of the case once immediately after purchase to inspect this BEAUTIFUL artifact. (They have never been touched by bare hands.) I placed the records back into the wooden sleeve, wrapped it in a pillow case, and placed it in my closet. I did not intend to sell this when I purchased it, but I'm in need of some money at the moment, and like all Third Man items, you gotta go where the equity lies, right? :) The only other time the records have been handled are for the photos included in this listing. There are some marks on the records, but overall they are still as lustrous as the day they were made.
The blemishes are as follows (also noted in the photos):
- Record 1, Side B (platinum) has a blemish (black "smudge") where the platinum is rubbed from the record. This was a blemish that was on the record when it was purchased.
- Record 2, Side C (gold) has a mark in the lead-in groove. It's pretty clear this mark came from rubbing against the sleeve.
- Record 2, Side D (gold) has several dull blemishes across this whole side of the record. This side was facing out and in person you can see the "dull" outlines of the fancy etchings of the wooden sleeve. My mistake here was leaving the records showing through the etchings. The picture I've included of these blemishes sort of underscore the actual amount of blemishes, but it's hard to get a good photo due to the very reflective coating of the records. There are a couple of areas on this side that I don't understand. I can only assume these will continue to happen over the course of time. They almost look like "oily" spots, but as I mentioned above this record has never been touched by oily human hands.
Please don't let the blemishes scare you off from this one. They are all pretty minor in the scope of the records as a whole, and when they are displayed in the wooden sleeve you can't see them. I don't believe this record was meant to be played, but if you were to decide to do that, I do not believe any of these blemishes would have any bearing on the sound. All other pieces of this collection are in the same condition as the day they were purchased.
I'm rating this as Very Good, but if I'm being honest it's in better condition that that implies. These blemishes are mostly due to the "innovative" ways Third Man has manufactured this product. The metallizing and the packaging make this a very delicate piece but it remains a true beauty, in my humble opinion.
Please also note that this set comes in ONE, wooden outer sleeve, stained blonde on one side and black on the other, with aluminium spines and brass rivets. As I'm sure you've seen in other photos this is a beautiful item for displaying, and this copy is no exception.
For shipping, to make certain this arrives with no damage in the mail- the records have each been placed into their own white archival sleeves to keep them separate and will be shipped outside of the wooden sleeve so as to keep them from rubbing off any more of the metal plating. I will ship the records in one 12" LP box and the wooden sleeve will also be placed in a separate mailer, and those will be placed in a larger box with padding for shipping. I guarantee this will be well taken care of in transit.
