Tin Machine by Tin Machine.
When David Bowie walked away from stadium-sized pop stardom in 1989 to submerge himself in a democratic four-piece band, few saw it coming. Tin Machine was exactly that gamble: a group in which Bowie shared vocals and rhythm duties rather than towering above his collaborators. The self-titled debut arrived on EMI USA, its cover shot by longtime Bowie photographer Masayoshi Sukita and its art directed by Roger Gorman, signaling a deliberate reinvention rather than a solo detour.
The playing here is raw, loud, and unmistakably a band effort. Reeves Gabrels tears through the material on lead guitar with a fearless, distorted attack, while Bowie's own guitar and Kevin Armstrong's rhythm work and Hammond B.3 organ fill out the low rumble. The rhythm section of brothers Tony and Hunt Sales—bass and drums respectively, both contributing vocals—drives everything with a swaggering, muscular pulse. Produced and mixed by Tim Palmer alongside the band, it's a record that prizes energy and grit over polish.
This particular pressing rewards the attentive collector: it includes the orange printed lyric inner sleeve and carries stamped runouts, with the telltale etched 'E-2-91990' variant setting it apart from other issues. A snapshot of Bowie choosing risk over comfort, it's a genuinely distinctive artifact from a fascinating chapter, and a rewarding spin for anyone who values boldness on wax.
