SIMPLY VINYL (1999)
Songs:
Side A:
1. Can We Start Again? 2. If You're Looking For A Way Out 3. Pretty Words 4. From The Inside 5. If She's Torn
Side B:
1. Before You Close Your Eyes 2. (You Take) This Heart Of Mine 3. I Know That Loving 4. CF GF
Vinyl:
Visual assessment: LP is USED -- it has definitely been handled and played -- but it has also been reasonably well cared for. No writing or stickers on labels. It's hard to see spindle marks on these labels. Vinyl has paper dust on both sides. A few hairline scratches that can be seen on both sides when the LP is examined closely under bright light. There is an approx 1c.m. scratch across track 3 on Side One, but this is non-feelable.
Both Sides play grade as VG with light static and light crackle being a feature on all the songs. This does not overwhelm the music, although it is present almost throughout. For me, such imperfection becomes part of the listening experience. A professional clean would most likely help to remove the dust in the grooves. There are soft 'clicks' on "Pretty Words" because of the scratch. There is one brief 'click' on the wonderful "From The Inside". Two 'clicks' that I picked up on "Before You Close Your Eyes" and one soft 'click' at the start of "(You Take) This Heart Of Mine". However, there is no distortion, and there are no 'skips'. Overall, this is an average USED copy: one which is fully playable and still enjoyable despite playing, also, with some moderate surface noise incl. a few 'clicks' on certain songs as noted above. Please do not bid if you are a fussy collector looking for a pristine copy!
Cover:
Grades as "Fair / Acceptable", perhaps slightly better. The main flaws are corner dents, creasing and an approx. 2.5 cm seam split to the bottom seam. Also, the spine has some dents and "TINDERSTICKS" (in particular) is not clearly legible anymore. There is wear to the corners, and there are some markings in places on the cover. Otherwise, there is only a hint of ring wear, the opening looks fine and the cover is still fairly well preserved with no writing and no tears. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs included below.
Insert with info on the songs and photo of the band very lightly creased but looks fine.
**** It's not easy to find this album on vinyl these days, but because the condition is average, the starting price for the auction is low and there is no reserve ****
A note on the grading:
Grading is conservative. I don't use "EX" or "VG++" or "EX-".
Vinyl:
Sealed records will be listed as “Sealed”.
If the record appears to be in flawless condition without any defects it will be graded as "Near Mint".
A near perfect, possibly unplayed record.
Any scuffs, scratches or marks and the record will be graded as "VG+". Typically this will mean a lightly played record with minimal and/ or occasional surface noise only.
A better-than-average used record. Play is fairly quiet.
The grading "VG" will be applied to a record which has been played a number of times and plays with some intermittent surface noise in the form of low level or background crackle, 'clicks', 'pops' etc. However, although surface noise is present and is part of the listening experience, it should not overwhelm the music or be too intrusive.
An average used record. Some moderate surface noise.
A record graded as "VG-" will play with surface noise which is distracting or intrusive or 'competing' with the music. It should still however play through without 'skips' or 'jumps' and should still be listenable.
A below-average used record. Not trashed - playable, but somewhat noisy in parts or throughout.
A record graded as “G” will either have ‘skips’ or jumps, sound terribly noisy incl. possible distortion in the vocals and/ or be unplayable. An abused record. Only value is in its rarity or as a ‘placeholder’ copy.
With many records play is variable. This will be reflected in the grading as, for example:
VG-/VG or VG/VG+ or VG-/VG/VG+
Cover:
Like new – pristine –9 or 10 out of 10
Very Good – minor defects only, such as a tiny mark or crease, or a hint of corner wear – will otherwise be almost flawless –7 or 8 out of 10
Good – light wear is evident, but cover still intact, with (for example) legible spine, some shine to laminate, no serious ring wear etc., well preserved –5 or 6 out of 10
Acceptable/ Fair – far more noticeable wear, incl. ring wear, corner wear, seam splits etc. although cover is still intact, functional –4 out of 10
Poor – shocking condition incl. pronounced ring wear, seam splits, writing, dirt etc.
–3 out of 10 or less
