In this auction:
-
“RUNT” LP by Todd Rundgren
-
This is AMPEX RECORDS A-10105.
-
It was released in 1970.
-
It is a WHITE LABEL PROMOTIONAL ISSUE of the ORIGINAL AMPEX PRESSING of the LP (NOT the later Bearsville Records pressing).
-
As you probably know, PROMOTIONAL RECORDS were produced in very small quantities. They were ONLY released by record companies to the radio stations and DJs for on-air play. They were NOT available for sale to the general public; therefore, they are typically more desirable and valued more by vinyl collectors and especially by the fans of certain recording artists.
-
This LP is significant, because it is IS TODD RUNDGREN’S FIRST SOLO LP after his time with his band, NAZZ, spotlighted him as the awesome singer/song writer (all-around versatile musician) that he truly is.
-
This LP features Todd’s FIRST HIT SINGLE “We Got To Get You A Woman”.
-
Both the cover and the labels of the LP in this auction list 10 tracks, not 11 or 12 tracks, even though the small white Bio-sticker on the rear cover states that “on it are a dozen songs he wrote and arranged…”
-
The COVER has a CIRCULAR WHITE STICKER with RED PRINT that reads: Promotional Copy NOT FOR SALE
-
There is also a 5 ½ -inch X 3 ½ -inch WHITE STICKER with BLACK PRINT, added by AMPEX Records on the rear cover slick, that provides a brief bio of Todd and his accomplishments prior to this, his first solo LP. (Again, It’s interesting to note that this bio sticker has the statement “on it are a dozen songs he wrote and arranged”; however, there are actually only 10 tracks on this promo LP.)
-
THE COVER is in VERY STRONG VG to maybe WEAK VG+ CONDITION with light to moderate overall wear that includes the following: moderate wear on the bottom two corners with slight “balding”; ¾ -inch of “balding” with paper loss at the top of the spine and corner and on ½ -inch of the top seam where it joins the top of the spine. As you probably know, this primarily dark/black front cover was notorious for easily developing and showing wear, especially ring wear, but there is NO ring wear on this copy as you can see in the images!!!
-
THE VINYL is in WEAK VG+ CONDITION with some very light/slight surface hairlines/scuffs (NONE are “feelable”) and LOTS OF GLOSS! The AMPEX PROMOTIONAL LABELS are CLEAN and WHITE.
-
Also included is the LP’s ORIGINAL PHOTO/LYRICS/CREDITS PAPER INNER SLEEVE. This paper sleeve has some moderate foxing/aging, what looks like a coffee or cola spill on the lyrics side and a 6 ½ -inch split in the middle of the bottom and a 2 ½ -inch split on one edge. It has a couple of light corner creases caused when it was inserted into the cover at the time of production.
-
And also included is an 8 inch X 10 inch B&W GLOSSY PROMOTIONAL STILL of Todd Rundgren. It was inside the cover when I found the LP. I don’t think it is an original insert for this promo LP, because it has the Bearsville logo on it, Todd’s record label after leaving AMPEX.
“RUNT”, Todd Rundgren’s first solo LP, is an OUTSTANDING LP that marked the beginning of his career as a solo artist (post-Nazz and pre-Utopia). And the fact that it is WHITE LABEL PROMOTIONAL ISSUE is even more reason for making it a part of your vinyl collection!
FYI: I used Goldmine Grading Standards (P for Poor, F for Fair, G for Good, G+ for Good Plus, VG for Very Good, VG+ for Very Good Plus, NM for Near Mint, M for Mint) to VISUALLY GRADE this LP, so please know the descriptions of these grades before bidding. Please ask any questions BEFORE bidding. And please check my other auctions for more Todd Rundgren and Utopia promotional vinyl you may want to add to your collection.
