Though released in 1965, this record features Tom Jones' very first studio recording of the song from 1963, tracking back to when he performed under the name Tommy Scott & The Senators. The track was produced by the legendary and eccentric British producer Joe Meek in a single-day session in 1963. Meek even brought in Ritchie Blackmore (later of Deep Purple fame) and his house band, The Outlaws, to overdub and enhance the instrumentation. Meek originally chose not to release the tracks. However, after Tom Jones signed to Decca and became a global superstar with "It's Not Unusual" in 1965, Meek decided to cash in on the singer's newfound fame. He sold the archival tapes to Tower Records in the US and Columbia in the UK.
