Description
One of the rarest releases of a legendary UK modern jazz label. I would imagine no further introduction is necessary to aficionados of this music.
It has seen a lot of playing time since its release in 1960, and many `hairlines` and scuffy marks are visible, but there is still a fair level of gloss present and no scratches that can be felt by my touch. Amazingly,at least to anyone not familiar with the quality of Decca pressings of this period, the sound is warm, loud and clear, with an extraordinary level of `presence` probably not much diminished from the time it was first played, `back in the day`. This is exactly the sound that analogue fans have always treasured, and which has undoubtedly motivated the resurgence of vinyl .
There are a good many surface `tics` throughout the record, and a handful of louder clicks, although the latter are of only a few revolutions duration. There are no instances of the stylus sticking or jumping. There is a faint level of `crackle`, which is really only noticeable between tracks. A grade of G+ might be the most appropriate overall, but the quality of the listening experience definitely outweighs the sonic flaws.
The record labels are VG, with no marks, scuffs or writing.; some very mild spindle marks are visible under strong light but the hole itself is undamaged and clearly defined .
The cover, as can be seen from the photos, is `hanging in there` pretty well, though somewhat frayed at the open edges. The bottom right corner of the flipback rim is missing a couple of inches, and there is a split of similar length at the lower open end. Generally, both front and back covers are clean and intact, with no tears, writing or other defacement (or stale tobacco aroma) aside from some missing lamination on the front cover (top right) and a few wrinkles near the open edge.
