Description

From the archives of a noted Australian rock’n’roll and entertainment historian comes this piece of classic New Zealand rock music history. A three-track ACETATE from The Tornados from the 1961 recording of their second His Master’s Voice single in New Zealand. The ACETATE has three tracks listed on it – Kon Tiki, Ja Da and another track that it’s difficult to determine from the hardwriting. Kon Tiki and Ja Da was the second of four Tornados singles released on the His Master’s Voice label. From the information recorded in pencil on the front sleeve, the session occurred at HMV (NZ) LTD, Victoria St, Wellington on 1 October 1961. Engineer was Frank Douglas. Producer was Dennis Bell. The band was comprised of Barry Coupland (Electric Lead Guitar0, Scott Arnold (Spanish Rhythm Guitar), Ian Hughes (Bass Guitar), Kevin McKeefry (Drums) and Robert Taylor (Univox). The number 6041 is stamped into the dead wax of the ACETATE. The Tornados were formed in Titahi Bay, NZ, in 1958. They had a minor hit with Goofus on the Tala label, then signed with HMV. They moved to Australia in 1963 and performed as the Kiwi Four. They came to the attention of Johnny Devlin, who took them on as his backing band and renamed them The Devils; Devlin, a fellow New Zealander, had a number of firsts in that country – the first rock star, the first gold record and the first to leave for Australia. He had four different backing groups in Australia – The Devils, The Red Devils, The Dare-Devils, and The Devils; the Tornados became the last incarnation of The Devils. The ACETATE is in Very Good Plus condition. The generic cardboard sleeve has all the recording information noted in pencil on the front.
