U2 Achtung Bay - rare South African pressing

On 02-Oct-11 at 13:52:43 BST, seller added the following information: U2 -- Achtung Baby -- South African LP cat # STARL 5876 VINYL: The record lies flat on the deck. There is a tiny feelable scratch at the start of 'The Fly' and a lightly feelable scratch across the first third of 'Acrobat' (*). Other than this, there are a few light or non-feelable scratches, and the vinyl has a generally clean appearance. The labels are clean. No writing. When the record is played, mostly slight surface noise/ minor crackle can be heard throughout play, but the music is generally well to the forefront. (Whether this is down to the LP having been played before, or because of the pressing itself, I am not sure.) Surface noise is a little more noticeable, as is to be expected, on the quieter songs such as 'One' (*), 'So Cruel' (*), 'Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World' (*), and 'Love Is Blindness' (*). A 'pop' on 'One' and two or three 'pops' on 'Ultra Violet (Light My Way)'. A few noticeable 'pops', 'ticks' can be heard in the first 30 or so seconds of 'The Fly' (up until the start of the vocal.) Two 'pops' on 'Love Is Blindness'. Despite such imperfections, play is generally consistent, and the LP is still a hugely enjoyable listen. Plays right through without 'skips' or 'jumps'. Play grades between 5(*)/ 5.5 out of 10 and 6.5 out of 10. A solid USED copy. COVER: The cover is a mixed bag. Under close examination there are numerous scuffs, marks, scratches, creases. It has staining/ 'spotting' in several places (brown marks.) It has a corner dent (to bottom left) and wear to the corners as well as some fraying to the opening. Spine has some wear, but the writing is still legible for the most part. Despite such signs of wear and a slightly grubby appearance, the cover is still perfectly functional. No seam splits, although there is wear to the bottom seam. No writing or tears. However, given the flaws above, the cover can only be graded as ACCEPTABLE. The inner sleeve has some creases and some light damage to the sides in one or two places, but is still intact. Lyric sheet has some creases. All in all, a decent copy of a hard to find pressing.

- Play is often variable for most records. Even sealed or “new” records may not play with the same grade right the way through as there may be scratches or pressing flaws which are often only picked up when the record is played.

VG++ (hardly any surface noise, or only the faintest traces of surface noise; generally very clean, quiet) – 8 or 9 out of 10
VG+ (some occasional surface noise heard in the background but play is fine) – 6 or 7 out of 10
VG (surface noise is heard more often – and is heard clearly in the same ‘space’ as the music – but is not especially intrusive, becomes part of the listening experience) – 5 or 6 out of 10
VG- (fairly frequent surface noise, sometimes intrusive i.e. starts to detract from the listening experience) – 4 out of 10
G (continuous and noticeable or very noticeable surface noise, often ‘competing’ with the music; still playable) – 3 out of 10
P (“trashed” or badly abused; terribly noisy, with distortion, skips, jumps: not really playable or enjoyable; listed as a “filler” copy because of its rarity) – 1 or 2 out of 10
Cover:
Pristine/ like new – 9 or 10 out of 10
Very Good – 7 or 8 out of 10
Good – 5 or 6 out of 10
Acceptable/ Fair – 4 out of 10
