PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. RARE 1973 ORIGINAL Canadian VERTIGO pressing in THICK colorful gatefold,much harder to find than you may imagine, this high quality press, it's no less than 44 years of age with a nice minty clean disc ... the complex layers and complicated time signatures should provide much interest from fans and followers of early prog-fusion with psychedelic and dreamy edges... the band creates to outer boundries less expolored at the time....
Labyrinth by NUCLEUS is solid jazz-prog-fusion from the golden year of 1973. Labyrinth was created to be somewhat of a concept album, a highly involved complex instrumental masterpiece telling the story of the Greek mythological character the Minotaur. With such a serious and heavy topic, Ian Carr needed to compose some equally dense music, and with virtually the same line-up as on the bands previous album "Belladonna," the results are staggering.
As stated, Labyrinth is a concept piece based around the Greek mythological character the Minotaur. Roy Babbington and Tony Levin keep a solid time with bass and drums respectively. Kenny Wheeler and Ian Carr are soaring through the mood with their soaring expressive winds often in tandem, then also often floating freely, giving the music a looser and broader mix than any other Nucleus album, though the previous album, Belladonna, does share those traits. "Adriadne" also offers a new dimension to the Nucleus sound. Singer Norma Winstone adds some dreamy vocals to this track adding some colour to the tune, surrounded by some neat whirling flute work which carries the album forward to the excellent work out within "Arena PT 1" and Arena PT 2" where Labyrinth takes off with some clean and sexy funky fusion sounds based around rock rhythms like much of Nucleus work, but even though the album can range a little wild it still cuts across as one of Carr's better efforts. If the concept of the album is loose the music plays on that to great effect. This big band feel version of Ian Carr's Nucleus works a treat here. Labyrinth does not take itself as seriously as the early Nucleus albums. Nucleus's time in the spotlight quickly faded after the split of the original line-up, but Ian Carr continued to release multiple albums under the band's name (or a variation thereof). 'Labyrinth' contains some strong titles. Leader Ian Carr parted ways with their guitarist Alan Holdsworth and the latter's pointless soloing. As a result, the band returned to their building blocks: groove and melody. After the experimental opener, 'Bull-Dance' brings the best Nucleus has to offer, subtle melodies, enchanting rhythms, a psychedelic mood and tight functional soloing. The song is accompanied by wordless vocals from Norma Winston. She also takes the leading role on 'Ariadne', a fairly standard prog-fusion. The ensuing 'Arena' is an alternate take on 'Bull-Dance' with a looser rhythm and noisier soloing. 'Exultation' sounds very much like the upbeat brass-rock of their earlier album, it has a strong leading melody but the Latin jam fits my taste slightly less. The 12 minute 'Naxos' makes for a strong ending, a circling bass guitar loop inspired the band for a meditative psychedelic jazz rock improvisation in a silent Davis' kind of way.
