The year was 1958. Stereo recordings were JUST made available to the general public (literally less than a year earlier). An average budget LP release was priced at a mere $1.49. Regular mono releases were $2.49 and stereo releases were priced at a whopping $3.99. (which, back in 1958, must have corresponded to something like $100.00 in today`s money,  or $10,000 in tomorrow's). 

Enter RCA Victor with this luxurious 10-volume set consisting of some of their most commercially successful classical titles to date (all of which were released in 1958: the proverbial dawn of stereo sound): from Tchaikovsky`s Pathetique to Rubinstein`s reading of Saint-Saens` third symphony. The set was undoubtedly intended for a very sophisticated, deep-pocketed breed of Hi-Fi maniacs, a rapidly multiplying breed back in those days.

The price of this opulent, graphically luxurious book-bound set could not possibly have been less than $40.00 in 1958 – a money that probably could have bought one a refrigerator or a TV set back then. And let`s face it: given the choice between buying a major household item and a set of (then-novelty) stereo records, most people opted for refrigerators.  No wonder, than, that RCA pressed precious few copies of this magnificent LIVING STEREO SET.  We operate on a premise than RCA issued less than 500 copies of this album (and possibly as few as 300) and that less than 150 survive in decent shape today. This is only the fourth copy we have found in 30 years.

We should add that all volumes in this set are identical to the commercially released copies; the set was lovingly assembled from the regular stock pressings of the RCA Living Stereo albums.

Living Stereo recordings - mostly classical, but also a handful of pop and easy listening titles - were made under the supervision of the most knowledgeable technicians and engineers on earth. The sound is simply amazing. On  mint or near mint copies , quiet passages are so quiet - and the surface noise so conspicuously absent - that you will not even realize that your stylus has hit the surface of the record until the music starts. The highs are high, and the lows are very low. You are going to need a subwoofer and a hypersensitive tweeter to express some of these tonal ranges appropriately. This is the music for the ears, heart, soul, mind and guts alike.

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          The 10 records (20 sides) range in condition from VG+ (VOLUMES 4, 5, 6 AND 9) TO VG++ (VOLUMES 1,2, 3, 10) TO EXCELLENT (VOLUMES 7 AND 8); . The original luster is very much intact

(b)          MOST (but not all) records come in their original, 'rice paper' inner sleeves (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(c)           The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          All records have a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(f)            MONO version of this set is not believed to exist (certainly not under this title).

·       COVER (PVC-coated linen-like box)

THE ORIGINAL PVC-COATED, BOOK-BOUND COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+). 

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PVC SHELL AND THE INSIDE POCKET WHICH HOUSES THE BOOKLET AND THE 10 RECORDS (WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY BOUND WITH METALLIC SPRING BINDER) HAVE COMPLETELY SEPARATED. HOWEVER, BOTH THE METALLIC CLASP ON THE INSIDE OF THE SHELL AND THE SPRING BINDER ON THE RECORD POUCH ARE PERFECTLY WHOLE AND INTACT, AND WE BELIEVE THE TWO CAN BE EASILY REATTACHED WITH A MINOR EFFORT (WE DID NOT ATTEMPT TO)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Old mold stains (which we removed as much as possible) cover much of the inside PVC shell of the box set, plus the first page of the booklet and the inside folding, but do NOT affect the rest of the package (the rest of the booklet or the record pouches). Minor remnants of moldy stains also noted on the outside

-        Minor tear noted on the first page of the booklet

-        Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.  Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-        Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has two corners on the spine visibly frayed / tattered

-        Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-        The PVC shell has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE BOX :

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
