Description
NOTE: I can only load one clip at a time, so check back tomorrow... I will try to change the track from the A to B side daily, so you can hear both sides.
Here's one I've never seen before, and will likely never see again: The Kegsmen, playing "Gloria/Tell Me", private demo acetate test pressing made by Edgewood Recording Studios at 1637 K Street NW in Washington DC. The name of the band and song names have been typed by typewriter onto the label. I've looked through all my price guides and reference books, talked to all my friends in the local dealing/collecting scene, and carried out an extensive Google search and have not been able to find any reference to this band. As this is an acetate, my guess is that anywhere between one and a few demo copies of this were made by the recording studio after it was recorded. How many survive, if any, aside from this one, is a matter of conjecture, but this could very well be the only extant copy anywhere. Fresh to the market from a Washington D.C. estate sale, presumably from the home of someone involved in some way with the band.
The music is first rate, garage band music, definitely good enough to be comped. There is a killer cover of Van Morrison/Them's "Gloria", somewhat reminiscent in tone to the Shadows of Knight version, but rhythmically more aggressive, especially in the chorus, and farer out/more impassioned vocals. The flip side, "Tell Me", is an original. Rather long, epic and forlorn in the best high school band tradition, it straddles the fence between American garage and British Invasion, with distant transitional echoes of doo wop. Great!
Without a doubt among the rarest of all Washington D.C. garage 45s. Sample clips below are missing the very endings... only the winning bidder will have access to the complete song! Condition rates about VG for each side... they look better, but play with some clicks and static, possibly owing to being an acetate (listen to sound clips below). 99-cent starting bid with no reserve!
