Description:Scarce and sought after original copy in shrink of the Universal Jazz Symphonette's "Sound Craft 75" LP. Big band free jazz, very much in a Sun Ra mode, with a lineup including Raphe Malik, Daniel Carter, Billy Bang, William Parker & the eccentric Earl "Goggles" Freeman:

"Earl "Goggles" Freeman was an outcat's outcat: musician, poet, visual artist, and all-around interesting fellow. Born in Oakland in 1937, Mr. Freeman was a noteworthy but somewhat enigmatic musician who was most active recording-wise when he was an expat on the '60s Paris free jazz scene. His discography includes dates by Archie Shepp, Sunny Murray, Kenneth Terroade, Noah Howard, Selwyn Lissack, Mike Osborne, and even Gong's first record. A Korean War veteran, he often wore an aviator's cap and goggles, hence his nickname. (He is also rumored to have worn a parachute onstage on at least one occasion.) In 1972, French state investigators hauled Freeman in for questioning and subsequently declared that he possessed a "Dangerous Political Image". Under threat of imprisonment, he hightailed it to Amsterdam. He hung there for a while until some folks smashed his bass, signaling that it might be time for another move.

Freeman was living in New York City by the mid-'70s, where he would occasionally perform with The Music Ensemble. He also directed the Universal Jazz Symphonette, as heard on the elusive Soundcraft '75 album...the LP is highly sought after because it features some of the earliest recorded work from William Parker, Daniel Carter, Raphe Malik, Billy Bang, and many other young players on the scene during that period, including Henry P. Warner and Philip Spigner, a.k.a. Adeyeme (incorrectly credited as Abe Yeme on the LP sleeve), who would later collaborate with Freeman in The Freestyle Band.

Good luck & check out my other auctions for more rare vinyl!!

GRADING:

All records are play graded conservatively - I have never had a record returned due to bad grading (and I'd like to keep it that way).

NEAR MINT (NM): Otherwise mint but has one or two tiny flaws that do not affect play. Covers should be close to perfect, with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident. A Near Mint cover might have slight ring-wear, minor denting to a corner, or unobtrusive writing on the cover, but should look close to new.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+): The record has been handled and played infrequently or very carefully. Not too far from perfect. On a disc, there may be light paper scuffs from sliding in and out of a sleeve or some of the original luster may be lost. A slight scratch that did not affect play would be acceptably VG+ for most collectors. This is what a lot of dealers call EX.

VERY GOOD (VG): Record displays visible signs of handling and playing, such as loss of vinyl luster, light surface scratches, groove wear and spindle trails. Some audible surface noise. Cover has heavy ring wear, seam splits, bent corners, loss of gloss, stains.

VERY GOOD MINUS (VG-): Vinyl may have numerous scratches including heavy scratches that will tick, heavy surface noise. A VG- cover might have large seam splits, tears, writing on the cover that obscures the artwork. I usually don't list records in this condition unless it is an extremely rare title.
