First released digitally back in 2022, Ronin II is the lauded partner album to Ronin I, a mixtape style LP that many critics saw as a return to form from James Lavelle's UNKLE project. As this deluxe, unmixed vinyl reissue proves, it remains a timeless collection of head-nodding trip-hop beats, deep bass, dreamy electronics, sweeping instrumentation and gorgeous vocals. It's ostensibly a set of radically reworked versions of tracks featured on its sister set, alongside a handful of new compositions, co-produced by frequent Lavelle collaborator Mink and featuring contributions from guests including Mark Lanegan, ESKA, Dhani Harrison and Callum Finn. In some ways, it sounds like it could have been made in the mid 90s, and for many UNKLE fans, that's undoubtedly part of the attraction.
