With The Beatles UNPLAYED UK Import ANALOG Stereo LP (PCS 3045) SIMILAR to the one pictured here 100% of the proceeds of this auction go to charity
This is an unplayed EMI British Import LP from the '70s with No Bar Code. We cracked this one open to make sure it wasn't warped and had no visible flaws, and we are happy to report that it has no issues of any kind. The cover is LIKE NEW, with square corners and just a couple of small dents. The MoFi Pressing Sucks While we can't tell you exactly how this pressing will sound, one thing I can say is that this copy will very likely murder the MOFI. Sure the MOFI pressing of With The Beatles is quiet but that's about all it has going for it. (The CD is quiet too, so what does that have to do with anything?) The MOFI has so many problems it would take an hour to describe them all. Suffice it to say, it's thinner, brighter, the voices are grainier, and the overall effect is the sinking feeling that you are listening to a cheap reissue and not the real thing. Don't the Beatles sound better than this?
One day I sat down and made notes track by track for all fourteen songs on the album. If you own the MOFI, play it. Listen to it critically. Make notes of which songs sound better than others and why. That's what we do around here all day, and that's how we've learned to listen critically, in order to evaluate the relative merits of each of these pressings.
A sealed MOFI of this record is well over $500 these days. And there's little chance that this copy won't beat the MOFI hands down.
What We Listen For At the risk of being definitive about things that are better left ill-defined, I would say that the Number One quality we look for in a pressing is that element of Life or Energy. We can put up with many shortcomings, including even some tonality problems, but when a record fails to convey the spirit and enthusiasm of the musicians, it's pretty much over.
The most serious fault of the typical Half-Speed Mastered LP is not tonal incorrectness or poor bass definition, although you will have a hard time finding one that doesn't suffer from both. It's Dead As A Doornail sound, plain and simple. And most Heavy Vinyl pressings coming down the pike these days are as guilty of this sin as their audiophile forerunners from the '70s. The average Sundazed record I throw on my turntable sounds like it's playing in another room. What audiophile in his right mind could possibly find that quality appealing? Nevertheless Sundazed and other companies just like them keep turning out this crap. Somebody must be buying it.
